BAMBOO WHISK "CHASEN MIDZUHIKI"

Takayama-cho, Nara Prefecture, Suikaien

at the heart of the tea ceremony

"Traditional mizuhiki" has been kept by the oldest muzuhiki artisans since their initiation in the 8th century "Nara Period".

This is a traditional decoration used for gifts at ceremonial occasions in Japan. It has the meaning of the seal indicating "unopened" and the amulet and the symbol of connecting people.

Chasen is made without using any chemicals. Before processing into Chasen, the bamboo is kept in a warehouse for more than two years to remove inside moisture from the bamboo naturally.
It is carefully handcrafted to be flexible and resistant to breakage.

Chasen traces its origin to Takayama, Ikoma, Nara Prefecture, during the Muromachi Period approximately 500 years ago.

It is said that Murata Juko, a tea artisan known as the founder of wabicha, asked Sozei to make a tea whisk appropriate for Chado. The result was the Takayama Chasen, which was then presented to the Emperor, who was highly pleased with the product and bestowed it with the name “ Takaho” along with words of praise.

Deeply moved, Sozei dedicated himself to the art and technical improvement of chasen. The crafting techniques have since been passed down from generation to generation.

A skilled chasen craftsman handcrafts each piece, resulting in an exquisite chasen.

It is said that there are only about 18 chasen craftsmen in Japan today. The Takayama Chasen, renowned for their superior quality, is noted for their flexibility and ability to whisk fine and smooth matcha.

Each chasen is meticulously crafted for durability, ensuring a lasting quality over time.

Unlike mass-produced matcha chasens, these chasen are entirely handmade, without the use of machines or chemicals to expedite the bamboo growing, drying, or shaping processes, requiring immense time and skill to craft. As such, Takayama Chasen has finer, more flexible tines and greater attention to detail, which not only makes them more beautiful but also easier and more enjoyable to use and more durable in the long run.

WHISK STAY "CHASEN YASUME"

An essential item to accompany your chasen

CARING FOR YOUR CHASEN
This chasen yasume maintains the shape of your chasen and is easy to store.
In addition, its design allows for air to pass through to prevent mold.

- After using the chasen, fill a bowl with lukewarm water, and whisk the chasen until the tines are clean.
- If there are any matcha left on the tines, gently wipe them with your fingers.
- Make sure to fully dry the chasen in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight before storing it.
- Do not use any soap or sponges, and be sure to clean the chasen shortly after use.

TEA CONTAINER "NATSUME"

The tea container stands out like a star in the host's spot

Chaki : Tea container used to bring matcha to the tea room.

Natsume is the most well-known type of chaki.

There are many kinds of containers used for holding matcha. Koicha containers are called chaire. In the sixteenth century, some chaire were known to have been valued as much as a castle! Depending on the shape and material it is made from, usucha containers are called natsume or usuki.

Tea containers can be considered one of the star utensils in a gathering. Guests always look forward to seeing the tea container selected by the host. Some of the lacquer Natsume are stunning in their workmanship with elaborate designs and dazzling use of gold. Sen no Rikyu favored plain black lacquer containers. Created over 400 years ago these are still the standard for today's pieces.

Each chashaku is handmade by craftsmen.

The chashaku could be considered the embodiment of the spirit of tea masters. Originally, the chashaku was probably carved for each occasion and not considered the art piece it is now. Passed from master to disciple, the chashaku gradually came to be seen as the embodiment of the person who carved it. Most were afforded poetic names by the carver to reflect the thought behind their creation. Much like the sword was to the samurai, to the tea master the chashaku could be considered a representation of their spirit. Chashaku is available in different shapes and materials today, but we offer a traditional chashaku that is primarily used in Chado.

*As each chashaku is crafted from natural materials, there may be variations in color and texture.
