Charm of tea bowls 茶碗 の魅力
There are many points to appreciate in a tea bowl.
From coarse textured earthen pottery to elegantly painted ceramics like kiyomizu ware, there is an immense variety of bowls used in chanoyu. The bowl in this picture is a black raku. Raku wares have a special connection to chanoyu. A shallow bowl, it was designed to suggest coolness and allow the heat of the tea to dissipate quickly. Aside from the shape and texture there are many points of the bowl to appreciate from kuchizukuri (the place you drink from), to the kodai (cut on the bottom).
