Natsume is the most well-known type of chaki.
The tea container stands out like a star in the host's spot.
There are many kinds of containers used for holding matcha. Koicha containers are called chaire. In the sixteenth century, some chaire were known to have been valued as much as a castle!
Depending on the shape and material it is made from, usucha containers are called natsume or usuki.
Tea containers can be considered one of the star utensils in a gathering. Guests always look forward to seeing the tea container selected by the host.
Some of the lacquer natsume are stunning in their workmanship with elaborate designs and dazzling use of gold. Sen no Rikyu favored plain black lacquer containers. Created over 400 years ago these are still the standard for today's pieces.
